What was once experienced only by emperors and empresses, the nobility and a small, wealthy elite, we now open to everyone – from all over the world. Neither wealth nor a noble title decides access to this place any longer, only a love of classical music.DISCOVER CONCERTS
The year theme from "Vienna Tourist Board" – more at Vienna, Grand New: Vienna’s Imperial Heritage Retold - vienna.info
Rooms that were once reserved for select guests at court are now open every evening to everyone who wishes to come – regardless of background or budget. What was once reserved for emperors and empresses, the nobility and a small, wealthy elite is now just a ticket away: for guests from all over the world. This is the strongest link to the present and, at the same time, the clearest rejection of any romanticisation: we do not celebrate the exclusivity of the past, we overcome it.
The Orangery was originally winter quarters for the court's citrus plants, not a concert hall. And yet even then it occasionally stood in the spotlight: as the only heated room in the complex, it was the setting in 1786 for the legendary composition contest between Mozart and Salieri. That music is played here today with modern light-show technology is therefore only logical: this place has always been reimagined, not merely preserved.
We are not just waiting for the world to come to Vienna: our Schönbrunn Palace Orchestra goes on tour itself and carries Viennese classical music out into the world.
In this way, a local, historic place becomes an internationally vibrant institution – just as much at home in Schönbrunn as on the stages of the world.
